Leitrim Football Championships Week 3 – Sports Roundup: Episode 213

Another hectic weekend with all clubs across the county playing the fourth weekend of the championship calendars at all levels of Gaelic Football.

It’s wins all around in soccer (2:38) this weekend with Niall Morahan of Sligo Rovers and Dearbhaile Beirne and her Peamount United teammates all securing wins at national league levels on Saturday evening.

Aaron Hickey converted a late penalty to secure a 5-4 victory for his Manor Rangers team over Merville United in Sligo on Sunday.

We run through the results in the Connacht Gold Senior Football Championship (4:03), Smith Monumentals Intermediate Football Championship (6:23) & Vistamed Junior B & C Championships (7:07).

We also run through the Ladies Football results at Senior (10:43), Intermediate (12:30) and Junior (13:08) grades.

We hear from some of the participants of the Senior Championship games with a chat with James Phelan (26:57),manager of Melvin Gaels, spoke to Breifne on Sunday evening, the day after their table topping victory over county champions, Glencar Manorhamilton.

Dom Corrigan (16:14), Wayne McKeon (21:15), Ballinamore Sean O’Heslins manager & captain and Daire Farrell (24:03) of St. Mary’s give their assessment of the senior clash between the sides on Saturday evening.

We also spoke to David Bruen (34:56) of Leitrim Gaels and Nigel Maguire (39:15) of Drumreilly after an entertaining championship game in Leitrim Village on Saturday evening.

On the ladies side of the game we caught up with Dearbhla Rooney (41:30) of Glencar / Manor after their reversal at the hands of Ballinamore Sean O’Heslins on Sunday morning.

Friday evening saw Kiltubrid emerge with the win against St. Francis to put them in pole position to win the battle for the final Semi final spot. Caoimhe McGarry (44:12) and Emma Guckian (46:04) joined us after the game.

Breifne also caught up with Leitrim Ladies manager Hugh Donnelly (48:00) who brought us up to date with the impact of the Covid lockdown on his sides plans and preparations.

Former county star Fintan McBrien (52:54) of Aughavas shares the importance of Junior football in terms of both developing young players, giving old timers like himself a run out and the social aspect of keeping players involved in the club.

On the ladies side at junior level we spoke to Elizabeth Honeyman (57:44) of Fenagh and Aisling Faulkner (59:42) of Glencar / Manor after the northerners edge their junior ladies clash by a single point.
