Leitrim Football, Hurling, Ladies Football & Carrick Town – Sports Roundup: Episode 169

All good things come in threes and that was the case this weekend with the return of all three national leagues with representation from the county. Our male and female footballers faced a trip to Derry while our Hurlers were a little closer to home in Enniskillen, Fermanagh.

We chat to Terry Hyland after his side’s fantastic performance bringing an unexpected draw back to Lovely Leitrim after giving Derry a proper scare in the opening round of the National Football League. We also hear from some of the players on the night, Dean McGovern, Shane Moran and Aidan Flynn share their thoughts after a thrilling encounter.

Olcan Conway led his new look Leitrim Hurler’s side into action in Brewster Park, Fermanagh in their first competitive game this season but after a slow start they found themselves nine points behind at the break. A spirited second half performance was in stored but ultimately ran out of time in their pursuit of a victory, going down by two points at the death. We speak to selector Clive Beattie, Captain Liam Moreton and Karl McDermott after the game.

The Ladies Footballers returned with aplomb to the inter county competitions after a year of reshaping the role of the county teams at all levels, the senior team featured a number of old returning faces as well as fresh legs from the underage grades to produce a high scoring, very one sided victory over a Derry side who didn’t offer much opposition to a Leitrim side which is operating a division or two lower than the ability level of the extended squad. We caught up with new manager Hugh Donnelly after the 5-17 to 0-3 victory.

We also take a look at the form of Carrick Town who went down to a League of Ireland inspired Real Tubber in The Showgrounds on Sunday morning. Someone more familiar with the Showgrounds in Sligo, former Rover’s player Raff Cretaro reeled back the years to produce a match winning display for the visitors as he prepares for another season in the League of Ireland Premier Division. We speak to the Carrick manager Jason Kavanagh as well as Shane Beirne and Aaron McLoughlin after the final whistle.

We also take a look at the rugby results and some of the schoolgirls representing the county with Connacht at the inter provincial tournament over the weekend.
