Episode 47: Sports Preview

It’s all about the next generation on the show today. With the Senior and Intermediate gaelic football championships on an off weekend we’re taking a look at the rising generation of International and Provincial stars from within the county in some of the other sports including Soccer, Rugby and Volleyball.

There is no rest for the women’s football however and Breifne is chatting to Laura O’Dowd of Oughteragh Gaels about Leitrim Ladies fantastic result to secure their Intermediate status last weekend and her club’s crunch clash with Dromahair on Sunday where a win is required to keep their semi final hopes alive.

The show will also be looking at some of the young athletes who have been making waves on the international and provincial scene including Manorhamilton’s Hannah Johnston and Leitrim Village’s Matthew Earley who will be aiming to defend their respective Inter Provincial titles won in the jersey of Connacht Rugby last season.

They are joined in the Connacht ranks this year with Will Whelan (U19) from Manorhamilton and Ballinamore’s Eddie Coyle (U18) for the Inter Provincial series.

Soccer also features with the return of the Sligo / Leitrim league and the big news from a Leitrim perspective is the return of an adult team from Carrick Town to the Premier League for the first time in a number of years, while Manorhamilton Rangers will be hoping to improve on their forth place finish in the Super League table this time around.

Both sides have been watching with interest this week as their former players have been making headlines. Muireann Devaney was in great Kompany this week as former Man City skipper Vincent Kompany dropped into her Irish U17 squad training session ahead of two games with Belgium, she shares the experience with us.

Niall Morahan talks about his new contract / scholarship with Sligo Rovers which sees his future in the game secure until the end of the 2021 SSE Airtricity League season. The news a welcome distraction from his current spot on the treatment table after picking up an injury at the recent U19 European Championships.
