Episode 27: Sports Saturday

It’s the opening weekend of the Connacht Gold Senior Football Championship, Smith Monumentals Intermediate Football Championship & Vistamed Leitrim Junior A Football Championship this weekend.

Defending champions Aughawillan got their title defence up and running with a comfortable 2-18 to 1-8 victory over Aughnasheelin in Cloone last night. Morgan Quinn from the penalty spot and Gary Plunkett with the two majors for the victors.

Later in the show, Aidan Flynn will be joining us to discuss Leitrim Gael’s impressive league form and how their clash with Sean O’Heslins’ second team on Sunday in Cloone has the potential to be a banana skin for many people’s Intermediate Championship favourites.

Ladies captain Claire Owens will join us to discuss the clash with Offaly this evening in Leitrim Village at 5pm with a place in the last 8 of the All Ireland championship up for grabs for the winner of the game.

I’ll also be talking to Declan Boyle about the growth of the Leitrim Sports Partnership in their tenth year of operations and some of the recreational programmes they provide for Leitrim people of all ages and abilities.

Finally Eileen Maxwell will be telling us all about Swim lough Rynn tomorrow morning in Mohill with one eye on her own challenge Flo Beo and swimming the length of the Shannon which starts on Thursday morning in Dowra.

I caught up with one of last night’s goalscorer for Aughawillan, Morgan Quinn, before the defending champions victory last night to discuss their chances of retaining their title.
