Episode 127: Dean Clancy & Sport Capital Grants – Sports Preview

This week new national Senior Boxing Champion Dean Clancy of Sean McDermotts Boxing Club in Manorhamilton dropped in for a chat with Breifne Earley.

He talks about the event and his title, making the step up to the adult grades and fighting without head gear for the first time. They also take a look towards the next step on his road to Tokyo 2020. The Elite National Championships start this evening with a highly anticipated bout against JP Hale of Belfast and he’s in action to secure yet another national title for himself and the club.

They discuss the method for decided who will wear the Irish shirt at Olympic qualifying tournaments with current European champion Kurt Walker also in his sights. Walker will not be partaking in this year’s elite championships, historically the deciding competition for who will wear the Irish vest on the international stage.

We’re also taking a look at yesterday’s announcement of over €350,000 grant funding for sports clubs around the county with Drumkeerin GAA’s Junior Haslette after they topped the local league table of 13 successful applicants with over €73,000 in funding for their new Astro Turf facility.
