Episode 79: In Focus – Merenda & ManorHUB
This week for ‘In Focus’ Breifne visits Merenda, a family owned business in Manorhamilton who manufacture high quality wood veneer component products.
Their Managing Director Ronan Haslette talks about the formation of the company by his parents in 1984 and the changes that have happened in the intervening years and the current challenge of maintaining a manufacturing plant in the north west of Ireland.
Kinlough native Sarah Rooney talks about her decision to return to North Leitrim to live and manage the public relations for Merenda. She’s also the manager of their sister company, ManorHUB, an incubation hub qhich provides a collaborative, modern and innovative work space for creative and remote professionals who need a professional business environment to grow and develop their businesses and career in North Leitrim.
New recruit in Merenda, Rosco Hoult, talks about his role in developing new products and processes to make the company more efficient and streamlined into the future and some of the concepts and directions that the company are planning on moving onto in the next few years.
Ronan shares about the challenges which lie ahead for the company with the impending Brexit and the chaos that comes with that. Merenda are hosting an event on the 1st of October to showcase the real impact of a no deal Brexit on his business. Himself and his staff will be operating all aspects of the company based on the new rules and processes of Brexit showing the implications of extra paperwork, rules, tariffs and time on his company. He’ll also be able to say exactly what the effect on his bottom line will be after the 24 hours operation.
He also talks about ManorBloc, Merenda’s fast burning kindling product which allows you to get a fire burning in your hearth quickly. It’s created out of his recycled wood reducing his landfill from 8 skips a week to a single skip once every 8-10 weeks.
