Episode 120: Leitrim Boxty Festival – Faces & Places

This week for Faces & Places we’re taking a look back at the recent Leitrim Boxty Festival where 8 finalists donned aprons, grated potatoes and got covered in flour to battle it out for the title of ‘Boxty Champion’ at the first ever Boxty Festival.

We hear how the event went as the Master of Ceremonies at the event, Tommy Moran, guides us through the presentation event, talking to each of the participants, judges and event organisers behind the successful weekend.

We hear from committee members Deirdre O’Connell, Paul Cunningham and Matthew McDonagh as well as partners and judges Detta McNiffe of McNiffe Boxty and Aine Faughnan of Dromod Boxty, the two commercial boxty makers in the county.

We also hear from each of the competitors at the festival as well as a brief chat with Michael Clancy and Phyllis Moran after their 3rd place and 1st place finish in the Boxty Making competition.

In terms of entertainment local Sean Nós Irish dancer and teacher Edwina Guckian danced the Boxty Cake Dance accompanied by John Touhy on the pipes.
