Episode 113: A Current Affair
This week for ‘A Current Affair’ we’re joined by Hubert McHugh and Valerie Cogan who are two Mental Health Community Nurses in South Leitrim. They’re talking about the new ‘Lifting the Silence of Suicide’ programme which is being launched by the HSE in centres around the county.
Hubert, a former Leitrim Person of the Year, shares his experience of four decades of work on behalf of the mental health of the people of the county.
Valerie chats about the ‘Lifting the Silence of Suicide’ programme and how it will be travelling around the county in the coming months to raise awareness of mental health issues in the county, educating the population to the signs of suicide and how people can have an impact purely by having a conversation. The programme aims to give tools to people to become more aware of the communities around them and connect with people who are lonely, isolated or vulnerable in the community.
Hubert credits Valerie as the originator of the ‘Health is Wealth’ event idea, which has been a resounding success across the county attracting over 650 attendees earlier this year and they are looking forward to hosting their 4th event on the 12th of February 2020 in the Landmark Hotel. With some excellent local and national speakers who will share their stories of mental health with the our community.
