Episode 107: A Current Affair
It’s Ladies Day here on ‘A Current Affair’, on Thursday the Landmark Hotel was the venue for a National Women in Business event organised by the Leitrim Local Enterprise Office.
Today on the show we hear from one of the speakers, Georgia from ‘The Art of Coffee’ & ‘Cafe Lounge’ about her journey from a recession hit, out of work, architect to following her passion for coffee and providing a quality coffee bean roast to the people of Leitrim and much further beyond.
With her ‘Art of Coffee’ brand now available throughout the entire island as well as Hungary, Denmark and the UK as well as third party private labels which have secured numerous awards at local and national level.
We also hear from Cllr Finola Armstrong McGuire who has been in business in Leitrim through her General Drapery store, The Magnet, on the main street in Carrick on Shannon.
Founded by her mother along with a friend in the 1950’s the haberdashery has been a fixture in Carrick on Shannon ever since. A one stop shop for general drapery, knitwear, gifts and school uniforms it has been open and trading ever since.
Finola shares the history of the shop and her experience of what it takes to keep trading in rural Ireland, the opportunities of being self employed and encouraging other women to consider a similar career path.
We also hear from Dr. Maeve O’Brien of the Foyle Women’s Information Network in Derry who are coordinating the PACT programme which enables women to get themselves a qualification in Peace and Conflict Transformation and leading to a Level 3 ILM qualification in Leadership and Management.
