Sports Person of the Month: January 2020
The current nominations for the Leitrim Sportsperson of the Month Award for January 2020 are as follows:
2016 Olympian Breege Connolly from Kinlough won the prestigious Fields of Athenry 10km road race smashing the course record with a fantastic time of 34.41 on St. Stephen’s Day, December 26th 2019.
Double jobbing as the manager of the Leitrim Pool team at the Northern Ireland 7 Man Team Championships held in Armagh on the 4th & 5th January, Carrick on Shannon’s Colin Crossan was also one of the top performers for the team as Leitrim’s side eventually lost 11-4 to 3 time All Ireland champions Antrim in the final.
Leitrim Village’s Matthew Earley was part of the Sligo Rugby Club side who secured the Connacht Senior Cup with a 19-12 victory over Corinthians of Galway in the Sportsgrounds on December 21st. They added the cup title to the league victory to win their first ever senior double for the club.
Leitrim U20’s last line of defence in the defeat to Fermanagh on Saturday 4th January in Tempo, Fermanagh Killian Gaffey from Carrick on Shannon made some fantastic saves to keep the margin down in his first game at this level for the county. Killian is a grandson of well known manager and coach Matt Gaffey.
Carrick on Shannon Rugby Club completed a late comeback to share the spoils 20-20 with Corinthians in Connacht Junior 1C last weekend. A late from their captain Keith Crossan try to level the game sees him take the nomination ahead of a number of candidates from the game.
One of the elder statesmen of new look Carrick Town FC senior side Sean Hayden impressed despite their 5-2 defeat to Chaffpool United to earn a nomination for the Local Sportsperson of the Month award.
