This week’s nominations for the Leitrim Sportsperson of the Month Award for January 2020 are as follows:

International Category

This week sees our first nominee for the International Category with Dean Clancy of Sean McDermott’s Boxing Club in Manorhamilton featuring with the Irish boxing squad for the first time at senior level at the Strandja International Boxing Tournament in Sofia, Bulgaria.

It wasn’t to be for Dean as he was beaten by an older, more experienced Italian fighter and the young Sligo / Leitrim athlete was adjudged to have won the second round of the bout.

National Category

There was celebrating in Drumshanbo on Wednesday as Drumshanbo Vocational School secured the All Ireland ‘A’ Cadette (U16) Volleyball title against Roscommon opponents Elphin in NUI Galway. Having battled through the first set, the Drumshanbo side dominated the second set blowing away their opponents to secure the national title.

The team join Jack Kelly, Alannah McGuinness & Peter Moran (Week 2) & Breege Connolly, Colin Crossan, Matthew Earley & Killian Gaffey (Week 1) as nominees for this month’s award. Local Category

Last year’s finalists, St. Clare’s Comprehensive Junior Boy’s Soccer team went one better this time around when they brought home the Connacht ‘B’ Junior (U17) Cup to Manorhamilton after dominating their final.

After leading the game by two goals at half time, the game ended 2-2 but the north Leitrim side needed a penalty shoot out to secure the victory in Athlone Town FC on Wednesday. They now face the Munster champions in mid February. The goals came from Cathal Óg O’Connell & Eanna Clancy with Peter Maguire and Diarmuid Giblin also impressing.

The team joins Shane Beirne, Robbie Cunningham & Brian McDonald (Week 2) & Sean Hayden & Keith Crossan (Week 1) as nominees for this month’s local award.
